What is GRP roofing resin?

GRP roofing resin is the polymer matrix used to bind glass-fibre reinforcement into a roofing sheet. GRP means glass-reinforced plastic; FRP is the broader term for fibre-reinforced plastic. Unsaturated polyester resin, or UPR, is a thermosetting resin: it cures through a chemical reaction to form the matrix of the composite.

During the trial, observe whether the resin wets the chosen reinforcement consistently and whether operators can consolidate the laminate effectively. Working time and cure behaviour

Ask how the resin’s documented gel and cure behaviour was measured, including the temperature and curing system. Confirm the processing instructions for the exact grade supplied.
For a hand lay-up trial, record the time available to distribute resin and consolidate the sheet. For a continuous line, agree the processing window with the resin supplier and equipment team before production.
Do not use a generic catalyst ratio or alter the curing system to compensate for an unsuitable process. Work from the current Technical Data Sheet, Safety Data Sheet and supplier-approved instructions.

Agree an approved cured-sheet sample rather than judging suitability from liquid-resin colour alone. Record the reinforcement, thickness, pigment and surface treatment used to make it so the result can be reproduced.

Match the resin to hand lay-up or continuous sheeting

Hand lay-up and continuous sheeting require different production assessments. In hand lay-up, reinforcement is placed in a mould and resin is spread manually. Continuous sheet manufacture can use resin and chopped fibres on a moving carrier film, followed by shaping and curing. Composites UK describes both manufacturing methods.
For manual production, assess whether the process is repeatable across operators and sheet sizes. For a continuous line, assess whether material delivery, impregnation, shaping and cure remain consistent through the run.
A product described as suitable for both processes still needs qualification on your equipment. Record the conditions that produced acceptable sheets and use them as the starting point for repeat trials.

How do reinforcement and surface protection affect roofing sheets?

Specify the reinforcement and the weather-facing surface as part of the sheet design. Synresins’ published RS 3030 information expressly links durability to the correct fibreglass mat and/or surface-barrier films.
Surface protection is also used in established rooflight systems. For example, Filon describes a UV-resistant polyester film bonded to the weather face of its external sheets to limit yellowing and extend durability. Do not assume a temporary carrier film provides permanent UV protection. Its intended function and compatibility need confirmation. Equally, describing a resin as UV-stabilised does not establish a service-life guarantee for the complete roofing sheet.

How to qualify a roofing resin before production


Qualify the finished sheet through a documented trial. Use the following sequence to make the result useful for both purchasing and production:


  • Define acceptance criteria. Agree appearance, dimensions, intended exposure, mechanical requirements and any customer specification before testing.
  • Confirm the material system. Record the resin grade, reinforcement, pigments, surface protection and approved curing instructions.
  • Make representative sheets. Use the intended profile, thickness and production method. A small flat sample may not answer every question about a profiled production sheet.
  • Record the conditions. Include batch references, material temperatures, process settings, observations and inspection results.
  • Evaluate the finished panels. Compare results against the agreed criteria and investigate failures before changing multiple variables.
  • Check repeatability. Repeat the approved process and retain identified reference samples before committing to routine manufacture.

For construction panels, ASTM D3841 provides a relevant reference covering glass-fibre-reinforced polyester panels, including workmanship and physical testing. Its published abstract identifies water absorption, tensile strength, thermal expansion and flexural strength among the tests.


Use the applicable standard and customer requirements to agree a test programme with a competent laboratory. Citing ASTM D3841 does not establish that a resin or sheet complies with it, or that it meets Kenyan project requirements. Confirm the requirements for the intended market before making compliance claims.


Appearance inspection cannot establish load capacity, fire classification or safe access onto a roof. Those require appropriate evidence for the finished product and its use.

Is GRP the same as polycarbonate roofing?
